A great black-and-white conversion is more than removing color — it is about redistributing tones so the image still has depth and drama without it. This tool uses a luminance-weighted conversion (the same approach professional editors use) so skin, skies and foliage keep their natural relative brightness instead of turning into muddy gray.

After converting, shape the image with Contrast and Brightness, and optionally add film Grain for an analog feel. Black and white is famously flattering for portraits, powerful for street photography, and rescues photos with distracting color casts. As with every PhotoEffect tool, processing is instant, local and completely free.

Tips for the best black & white look

Black & White effect — FAQ

Is this better than just desaturating my photo?

Yes. Simple desaturation averages the color channels and often produces flat, lifeless grays. This converter weights red, green and blue by how bright the human eye perceives them, preserving natural tonal relationships — then gives you contrast control on top.

Can I make a partly black-and-white photo?

You can blend the conversion with the original using the Strength slider — at 50–70% you get a moody, desaturated color look that is popular in cinematic grading.

What photos work best in black and white?

Photos with strong light and shadow, interesting textures, or emotional faces. If the color is not adding meaning, black and white usually makes the image stronger.
